Backgroud and Objectives Arterial stiffness measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AI) is an emerging risk factor of cardiovascular diseases or events. The aim of this study was to investigate simple and feasible echocardiographic measures for arterial stiffness. Methods A total of 154 patients (58.9짹10.3 years, 111 males) who were scheduled to perform coronary angiography were enrolled. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), central aortic pressure, and augmentation index (AI) were measured by commercially available equipments as the index of arterial stiffness. Pulse propagation time interval (PPTI) between the origin site of descending thoracic aorta and upper abdominal aorta by pulse wave Doppler echocardiography and distensibility of the upper abdominal aorta (AOdis) by M-mode echocardiography were measured as the echocardiographic parameters of arterial stiffness. Results Heart-femoral PWV (HFPWV) was 948.1짹178.1 cm/s and brachial-ankle PWV (BAPWV) was 1448.1짹251.8 cm/s. Central aortic blood pressure was 116.2짹17.3 mmHg in systole (CSBP), 77.2짹11.1 mmHg in diastole (CDBP), 39.4짹10.2 mmHg in pulse pressure (CPP), and AI was 26.6짹13.3. PPTI was 35.7짹16.5 ms and AOdis was 11.1짹5.9%. PPTI showed significant negative correlation with HFPWV (r=-0.52, p<0.01), BAPWV (r=-0.34, p<0.01), CSBP (r=-0.35, p<0.01), CPP (r=-0.47, p<0.01), and AI (r=-0.41, p<0.01), but not with CDBP. AOdis also showed significant negative correlation with BAPWV (r=-0.34, p<0.01), CPP (r=-0.35, p<0.01), and AI (r=-0.28, p<0.05), but not with HFPWV, CSBP, and CDBP. PPTI showed significant positive correlation with AOdis (r=0.29, p<0.05). Conclusion Our results suggested that Doppler derived PPTI and AOdis by echocardiography can be used as a simple and feasible newer marker of arterial stiffness.
