Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is recognized as one of the factors that predispose to the progression of tricuspid regurgitation (TR). However, the effect of radiofreqeuncy catheter ablation (RFCA) on TR in patient with AF remains unclear. Methods The paroxysmal (PAF, n=22, male 17, 54.6짹10.4 years) and persistent AF (PeAF, n=11, male 10, 58.3짹10.0 years) patients who had maintained sinus rhythm for 3 months after RFCA with circumferential pulmonary vein isolation with or without linear ablation were studied. 2-D and Doppler echocardiography were performed at baseline and 3 months after RFCA. Left atrial (LA) size and volumes, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and LAEF, and TR were assessed. The grade of TR was classified and coded as 0 (none), 1 (trivial), 2 (mild), 3 (moderate), 3.5 (moderate to severe), and 4 (severe). Results In PAF, LA dimensions decreased significantly 3 months after RFCA. LA end systolic and diastolic volume significantly decreased in the patients with PeAF 3 months after ablation. LVEF improved significantly only in patients with PeAF 3 months after RFCA. While TR increased slightly in the patients with PAF (p=0.492), patients with PeAF had a trend to decrease in degree of TR after RFCA (p=0.052). Conclusion The restoration of sinus rhythm by RFCA for AF demonstrated reverse morphological changes in the LA and improvement of LV systolic function, which was associated with attenuation of TR in patients with PeAF.
