Objective: The purpose of this study was to quantify of the right ventricular (RV) volume and function in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (cc-TGA) by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography
Method: A total of 5 adult patients and 1 child in sinus rhythm or electrical pacemaker beat with cc-TGA and adequate 2- dimensional image quality were included. The real-time 3-dimensional echocardiographic multiplane interpolation and full volume reconstruction (FVR) methods were used for RV volume analysis.
Results: Three patients underwent tricuspid valve replacement, 2 patients left ventricle to pulmonary arterial conduit surgery and 1 patient double switch operation. In 5 adults patients with systemic RV, RV end-diastolic volume (EDV) was 123.0± 13.9 ml, RV end-systolic volume 74.4 ± 9.4 ml, RV stroke volume (SV) 48.4 ± 6.9 ml and RV ejection fraction 39.6 ± 4.2 %. RV performance index by using tricuspid valve and aortic valve inflow Doppler was 0.66 ± 0.30. In 1 pediatric patient with double switch operation, RV EDV was 43 ml, RV ESV 18 ml, RV SV 25 ml, RV EF 58% and RV performance index 0.85.
Conclusions: Although real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography has still some technical limitations, FVR method may be useful in patients with cc-TGA, intricate RV geometry, and good 2-dimensional image quality.
