Background and purpose The vasa vasorum is a network of small blood vessels that supply large blood vessel. In previous study, the presence and degree of adventitial vasa vasorum and plaque neovascularization on contrast-enhanced carotid ultrasound correlates with cardiovascular disease. So, we evaluated clinical characteristics of carotid plaque with plaque neovascularization in contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging. Method The contrast-enhanced carotid ultrasound examination of 57 subjects (mean age 69, 71% male) were analyzed for the presence of intraplaque neovascularization (absent/present). These observations were correlated with preexisting cardiovascular risk factors, presence of cardiovascular diseases, and lipid profiles. Results Among 92 intraluminal carotid plaques, intraplaque neovascularization was found in 49 plaques and intraplaque enhancement with documented microsphere activity was noted in 43 plaques (46%). The presence of intraplaque neovascularization was associated with significant more subjects with coronary artery diasease than absence of intraplaque neovascularization(OR 1.823, 95% Cl 1.084-3.065, p value = 0.016). Also the presence of intraplaque neovascularization was significantly correlated to male sex (OR 1.384, 95% Cl 1.055 – 1.815, p value = 0.013). But sex was an only significant factor for intraplaque neovascularization in multivariate analysis. Conclusion The presence of intraplaque neovascularization in the carotid plaque may be associated with coronary artery disease and sex.
