Background and Objectives : Little is known about the clinical characteristics of patients with situational syncope such as micturition (MS) or defecation syncope (DS) compared to patients with common vasovagal syncope (VVS). Subjects and Methods : Between Jan 2006 and May 2010, 550 patients who underwent head-up tilt test were included and 191 patients who had MS (n=32), DS (n=33), or common VVS (n=127) were finally analyzed in this study. Results : Patients with DS were older and more likely to be women compared to patients with MS or common VVS (p<0.05) (Table). History of alcohol drinking before syncopal attack was more frequently observed in patients with MS (43.8%) than in patients with DS (3.0%) or common VVS (7.9%) (p<0.001). There were no significant differences in the frequency of injury, family history of syncope, number of syncopal episodes, and duration of syncope among three groups. Conclusion : The distributions of age and gender differed among the patients with DS, MS, and common VVS. The relationship between alcohol drinking and syncopal episodes was stronger in patients with MS.
