Background: Several data have been reported gender-based differences in patients undergoing implantation of bare metal stents. However, there is paucity of data about gender differences in the drug-eluting stent (DES) era. We investigated the impact of sex on outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with DES
Methods: We analyzed consecutive 6,749 patients performed PCI in COACT (CathOlic medical center percutAneous Coronary inTervention) registry from January 2004 to December 2009. We investigated clinical outcomes (major adverse cardiac events(MACE), composite of death, myocardial infarction, target lesion revascularization, and target vessel revascularization) according to sex.
Results: 2426 patients were women (35.9%). Women were older (67.8 ± 9.5, p<0.001) and had more diabetes (42.2% vs. 34.3%, p< 0.001), hypertension (71.3% vs. 54.2%, p<0.001), dyslipidemia (16.5% vs 10.4%, p<0.001) and renal insufficiency (28.3% vs 16.8%, p<0.001). Women were less likely to present with acute coronary syndrome (48.1% vs. 54.5%, p<0.001). Women had more MACE in univariate analysis (20.0% vs. 15.7%, p<0.001), but there was no difference in MACE between male and female in adjusted multivariate analysis.
Conclusion: There is no gender effect on outcomes after PCI with DES, in despite of more adverse cardiovascular risk factors in women.
