Background/Aims: The Peripheral Artery Questionnaire (PAQ) is a validated scale to evaluate health status (symptoms, function and quality of life) in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). The aim of this study was to translate the PAQ into Korean and to evaluate its reliability and validity for application to Korean patients with PAD. Methods: We prepared the Korean PAQ (KPAQ) by translating and back-translating the original PAQ with modifications to adapt it to Korean culture. The multi-process of forward translation, reconciliation, back-translation and proofreading of the Korean version was conducted. The test-retest reliability of the KPAQ was evaluated at a 2-week interval using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). The validity of the KPAQ was assessed by identifying associations between KPAQ scores and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Results: A total of one hundred fifty subjects were enrolled: 100 patients with PAD and 50 healthy controls. The reliability of the KPAQ was adequate, with an ICC of 0.71 for test-retest reliability. There were strong correlations (r=0.94, P<0.001) between KPAQ’s subscales. Cronbach’s alpha for the summary score was 0.903, indicating acceptable levels of internal consistency. With respect to validity, there was a statistically significant correlation between the total HAQ score and the scores of all component of the PAQ except treatment satisfaction and summary scores of PAQ (r=-0.93, P<0.001 ). Conclusions: Our results indicate that the KPAQ is a reliable, valid instrument to evaluate health status of Korean patients with PAD.

Table . Six domains (range 0-100) of PAQ. Higher scores indicate less functional limitation, fewer symptoms, better treatment satisfaction, higher social functioning, and better quality of life. Values are expressed as means ± SD.
