Backgrounds
As regular exercise improves endothelial dysfunction and promotes cardiovascular health, we investigated the effect of training on vascular function by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in patients with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods
Fifty-nine patients done PCI recently were randomized to full medical treatments (control group) or additional 3 months regular exercise program (4 times a week, 1 hr a day) . FMD was measured at baselines and after 3 months exercise. Exercise training programs contained stretching and interesting aerobic exercise using group dance sports.
Results
This analysis contained 17 patients(male 10, female 7) joined exercise program. 28 patients(male 19, female 9) were control group. There was no significant difference of baseline characteristics between 2 groups. After 3 months exercise program, FMD improved significantly in exercise group compared with control group (P=0.001). The effect of exercise to FMD improvement in male patients is stronger than female patients. (P=0.031) (Table and figure)
Conclusions
Three months regular exercise training improved FMD in patients done PCI recently. The exercise effect of male patients was stronger than female patients significantly.
